San Rafael Hotel
2da Calle Poniente, 7. Antigua Guatemala, 03000 Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala

If ever there was a place that epitomised the genre of the ‘boutique hotel’ then the San Rafael in Antigua Guatemala is it. This seven bedroom luxury hotel is small but perfectly formed and when you first walk through the gates of this restored colonial mansion it will be a feast for all your senses. Enter into an enchanting courtyard and you will be engulfed with the scent of Italian cypress. See the colourful blooms of the native plants that surround the two fountains and admire the stucco and large stone columns. The roofs are covered with antique tiles which are also used over the walkways. The hotel reception is conveniently located just off the courtyard, where newly arriving guests will be greeted with a welcome drink. Also nearby is Antiqua’s main square and the shops and restaurants of Fifth Avenue

The Rooms

The individually designed rooms surround the two courtyards and each one has beamed ceilings and gorgeous fireplaces which are perfect for cosy nights in. Most are junior suites that come complete with custom-designed four-poster beds, antique Persian carpets, hand woven Guatemalan fabrics and wooden furniture made by real artisans. Bathrooms are just as luxurious with rain showers, marble sinks and top end toiletries.

The San Rafael doesn’t have a restaurant as such but there are plenty to choose from close by. Because of this breakfast is a special occasion here, which you can enjoy either in the courtyard or the dining room. The breakfast menu includes traditional Guatemalan offerings like scrambled or fried eggs accompanied by refried red or black beans and corn tortillas or fried plantain slices. There’s also a rotating array of special dishes. Breakfast is served between 7:00am and 10:30am weekdays, 11:00am weekends.

Within five minutes walking distance is Angeline, a fine dining restaurant without the attitude! Angeline offers contemporary cuisine that focuses on local Guatemalan ingredients. It also has a unique bar and wine program, exceptional service, and world class entertainment. Also nearby is Los Tres Tiempos which serves top quality Guatemalan food in a relaxed, fun and contemporary setting overlooking the beauty of Antigua's colonial rooftops and volcanoes.

Not to be outdone by any pretenders to its crown of ‘luxury hotel extraordinaire,’ The Surrey offers guests some amazing treatments at its Cornelia Spa. Head up to the second floor for a relaxing spa experience and enjoy a range of treatments from honey scrubs to seaweed wraps. Once you’re suitably de-stressed drag yourself up to the rooftop where you will find a terrace with draw dropping views!
